The week of June 14-21, 2014

The Environment:

Water – Temps are up to 81-85-degrees. Afternoon easterly breezes.

Clear, flat calm mornings.

Air – Highs in the 90s. Afternoon winds are cooling and pleasant.

The Bottom Line:

Blue marlin showed in surprisingly large numbers. At least 10 blues were released by the hotel fleet in the past four days. Yellowfin tuna have been in and out all week with some quality fish in the 100-pound range taken outside under the porpoise. The big gallos or roosterfish are still biting aggressively with very light fishing pressure. Striped marlin are abundant and very close to the hotel.

The dorado fishing has been OK if not spectacular this week as well. Lots of big amberjack and pargo were taken off the bottom. The water is much warmer than normal … at least a month ahead of schedule making for some spectacular fishing.

All-in-all: Call it a 9 on the Rancho Leonero 1 to 10 scale.

Marlin – The most blues released over the past week that Leonero captains can recall in years. At least 10 were brought to hand; none over 300-pounds. All of them were taken off the inside banks.

Lots and lots of striped marlin. All boats targeting billfish are scoring at least one; most boats multiples. Almost all the stripers were taken on trolled ballyhoo within sight of the Ranch.

Yellowfin Tuna – Spread out all over the place; bigger ones outside under schools of porpoise. Three fish over 100-pounds! And it’s getting better every week.

Dorado – The Golden Ones are getting bigger. From the ones we’re nailing on trolled ballyhoo it appears they’re gaining five pounds a week or more.

Roosterfish – If you’ve never caught one, now is the time. Pressure is light as most anglers are looking for tuna and marlin.

Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch …

Very good pompano, pargo and amberjack fishing continues.

Anglers of the week
