DANA POINT – A 22-foot powerboat burst into flames at the fuel dock at Dana Point Harbor early Sunday morning.

The incident occurred at 7:35 a.m. when the boat was pulled up to the
fueling dock near the harbor jetty, said Lt. Jeff Hallock of the Orange
County Sheriff’s Department. Before the vessel was fully engulfed, the
people aboard jumped off and the boat’s operator moved it away from the
fueling dock.

The boat was completely engulfed when Sheriff’s Department Harbor
Patrol arrived. Two of the department’s fireboats doused the flames. A
third sheriff’s fireboat brought personnel from the Orange County Fire
Authority to assist.

The powerboat capsized while the fire was being extinguished but
remained afloat, Hallock said. There were no pollution issues following
the fire but the boat was tied to a buoy and a boom is being used to
keep it in place.

Fire Capt. Steve Concialdi said that the sheriff’s boats did most of
the suppression because the powerboat was free-floating in the water and
the sheriff’s fireboats were immediately on scene.

The powerboat was totally destroyed, Hallock said. The Harbor Patrol is investigating.
