CATALINA (CBSLA.com) — A man was rescued Tuesday from the back side of Catalina Island after his boat’s engine caught fire and the vessel ran aground.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department was notified around 6 a.m. of the 24-foot vessel near Binnacle Rock by a good Samaritan.

Authorities found one man on land who stated his engine had caught fire but he was able to extinguish the flames on his own.

After the fire was put out, he was unable to start the engine and began drifting toward shore.

“He stated the vessel was pushed ashore by swells (from Hurricane Iselle) before he could throw out his anchor, and the vessel ran aground,” Baywatch Avalon said in a statement.

The boater, who was treated for hypothermia, was stranded for 10 hours overnight with no cell service and no working radio to call for help.

The vessel was deemed not seaworthy to tow and left on scene to be salvaged later, officials said.
