Opah on 1/2 day boat.
#11
I saw the video to the Opah getting gaffed on the sporty...Its so sad to actually see full time deckhands who cant even gaff a fish as big as a opah. Gaffing fish right in the meat is the one main reason why I dont fish on sportys unless its for rock fish or small stuff.

On some big fish you sometimes have too, but i agree the sport boat guys are in a number game and just get fish on the deck.
And yes dropping the gaff, that was bad. i could see on a green fish like a mako or big marlin going nuts, but to that fish.

Let God lead the way!
Give a man a fish he eats for one day, teach him to fish he eats forever!

Not the sport boats I fish/worked on. IMO I would much rather loose a fish then have somebody gaff the fish right through all the meet. On the private boat that I have been fishing on for the past 9 or 10 years if you gaff a fish and its not in the head you are not allowed to gaff any fish again ever on the boat. So I was "trained" to take my time and gaff the fish in the head(And its really not even that hard honestly)

Gaff in the meat make the area around it bad?

Yup. Especially on fish like tuna that have a blood line right in the middle of their meat.
