SAN CARLOS (SONORA) — San Carlos just hosted the 7th annual Mexican National Championships to determine who goes to the world championships in France. With a full moon, and not much bait around, it truly was a test.

“Teams from Veracruz took first and second place,” Bryan Replogle of Team Margarita Sport Fishing said. “The first place team won with 4 billfish releases. Second place may have only been two releases with some weighable fish. Fishing was slow under the full moon. There was not a lot of bait and the water color has been off. Most of the dorado were under the 5-Kg minimum weight.”

“Some larger dorado have been farther up the coast and some bigger fish were caught earlier in the week along with billfish,” Replogle said. “We are starting to see some pockets of cooler water attempt to reach our area. But for the most part they are further up on the other side, where I'm sure there is good fishing.”

“And of course, just after the tournament, a 500-pound marlin was caught,” Replogle said. “My friends also claimed a 65-pound dorado last week. The only report that I have heard of for tuna were 2, weighing 30 to 35 pounds. I have been on vacation in the states so I have not been pulling on any fish here, but another friend pulled up a 37-pound yellowtail just north of the Island fishing early with squid. He also caught nice red snapper.”

“Most of the billfish have been around the reef and Island of San Pedro Nolasco, with other fish in close and farther out,” Replogle said. “Even though there has not been a lot a lot of bait around, the water has cleared up right in front of San Carlos, so I think the fishing will pick up.”

Replogle said the charters should be starting up pretty good this month. “This weekend is the Cantina Cup, which is the qualifier for the World Championships in Quepos, Costa Rica,” he said. “It’s always a fun tournament with great fishing and I'll be looking to repeat my past standing.”

In other Mexico fishing action:

— IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO: Capt. Temo Verboonen reported a non-eventful fishing week from Zihuatanejo Bay with no charter fishing reports due to a lack of anglers at the pier. He added, “It's that time of year when we are in the tail-end of our summer season and finishing boat maintenance, getting ready for the upcoming fall fishing season that typically takes off in early November.”

— MAZATLAN: Following a 1-day port closure the conditions remained very good throughout the area with stable temperatures in the 87- to 88-degree range and excellent clarity outside the 14-mile mark.

“It’s been very slow on anglers this past week, with only three offshore fishing days that resulted in 1 sailfish, 3 dorado and 5 bonito,” Larry Edwards of Cortez Yacht Charters said. “The inshore super pangas also had a difficult fishing week that included only three charters that produced only 2 dorado for their efforts. This is one of the slowest reports we have encountered for the inshore fishing aboard the super pangas in more than a year.”

— PUERTO VALLARTA: No report this past week.

— CANCUN TO COZUMEL: Even the full moon didn’t slow the fishing down from Puerto Morelos and the overall report reflected pretty good results for the 18 charters fished, producing a 9 fish species in the catch report.

“The skippers reported 1 sailfish, 17 dorado, 30 bonito, 8 Spanish mackerel, 14 giant Atlantic barracuda, 17 snappers, 3 grouper, 2 triggerfish and 11 soapfish,” Larry Edwards of Cortez Yacht Charters said.

Let God lead the way!
Give a man a fish he eats for one day, teach him to fish he eats forever!
