SHAVER LAKE — After several months of excellent trout fishing at Shaver Lake, the action slowed down this past week. Multiple limits are possible, but you have to look for them, hit the right depth and use the right tackle.

Guide Dick Nichols of Dick's Fishing Charters continues to put his clients onto limits of nice-sized trout, but he said it is more difficult to find them than the previous weeks.

Two of his clients, John Parra, of Shaver Lake and Hans Williams of Stockton, picked up multiple limits over the weekend with Nichols, keeping their two limits for dinner.

The best area for trolling has been Dorabella Cove with the island, Black Rock and in front of the Shaver Lake Marina as alternative areas to try.

With the day's cooling into the 60s and the surface water temperature dropping to 66 degrees Nichols has been fishing with downriggers at 30 feet deep and the side poles equipped with Trout Busters, tipped with ’crawler behind weighted Mountain Flashers, at 120 feet back of the boat or about 23 feet deep. The downriggers poles also have little Mountain Flashers in front of Trout Busters at 30 feet behind the ball troll.

Shore fishing is slow for most, but some bank fishermen are saying they are catching an average of 2 to 3 fish per trip. Power Bait in orange, chartreuse and rainbow has been the best.

The marinas are scheduled to close for docked boats later this month, but check with them for dates and times that they will be open to service anglers.
