local tuna and yellowtail
#1
Went out on Saturday with @choodak ... we launched out of oceanside and got a nice scoop of 4-6" dines with a couple macks.
Headed straight out to the 209 and trolled while looking for patties. All patties holding tons of bait, just no fish. Finally found a stretch of water 65.2 and a nice patty with a couple birds on top.. made first drift for one 5lb yt. Hooked and lost a handful more. Drifted off the patty and soaked some baits. Choodak hooks into a fish for a 10-15 min fight... deep color.... it's a bluefin! Get it within two feet till galf and the hook popped. Bummer. Needless to say we are getting a longer galf. Before we knew it three other boats pulled up so we bailed to find another lone patty. Headed to the 181 for nothing the rest of the day. Had a buddy who hooked a mako and heard chatter of some very large tuna caught. Still early but the signs are pointing towards a great year.
men and fish are alike. we both get in trouble when we open our mouths.
